West Africa is an area plagued by a decade+ long civil war, desperate poverty, and widespread disease. But it is also an area filled with some of the most resilient people you will ever meet. The people of West Africa may practice Isalm or Christianity on the surface, but underneath, tribal culture and tribal religions run deep. An entire generation came to age during years of violent civil war leaving them lacking in education and job skills. Understandably, their instinct is to do whatever’s needed simply to survive. The Ebola outbreak running from December 2013 to spring 2016 ravaged an already devastated area. But Water of Life knows with God all things are possible, and we are seeing vast improvements in an area thirsty for good news. Most of our work takes place in Sierra Leone and Liberia, but just like God’s love, tribal villages don’t always follow political boundaries - so we sometimes find ourselves crossing into Guinea to serve villages in need.
Water of Life has partnered with Pastor Alphonso Barry with Africa for Jesus. Since our partnership, Pastor Barry’s ministry has grown from 6 churches to over 70 in a country that’s smaller than the state of South Carolina. Despite the country’s small size, God is still moving in big ways. Here’s one small glimpse into the ways the Holy Spirit is moving in Sierra Leone
In February of 2012, Water of Life drilled a well outside of an old mosque in Kychom Village. Later, that mosque was given to Pastor Barry to use as a Christian church. After needed repairs to the building and grounds, the first Christian worship service was held on February 17, 2013 – and nearly 800 people came to worship! Last September, God moved in Kychom again. The chief Imam of the Muslim Mosque of Kychom sent his two eldest sons to help the Christian church finished needed repairs. He gave them explicit instructions: 1. Do not accept any money as a form of people as the Christians are good people and you should help them. And 2. You should stand in front of everybody and BE a part of the church. That’s right. The chief Imam of the village urged his sons to convert to Christianity.
- In 2013, more than 18,000 Sierra Leoneans were given fresh water and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
- In 2014, 35 new wells were drilled reaching 25,000 people.
- In 2015, more than 35,000 people were given clean water and the hope of Christ through the drilling of 48 new fresh water wells.
Water of Life has two partners we’re working with in Liberia allowing us to work in big ways. Dennis Aggrey with the Christian Revival Church Association (CRCA) builds the trust to reach the villages with the love of Christ in their own languages. The Last Well is providing half of the needed funds to drill the wells – providing fresh water to a thirsty country and opening the door for CRCA to share the Gospel of Christ. The Last Well has also set a huge goal to complete the last needed well and take the Gospel to every village in Liberia by the year 2020. We have currently completed Bomi County and are systematically moving our drill rigs and team of pastors throughout the country. And these efforts are making a big difference.
“[Prior to Water of Life’s involvement] we had four children who died from running stomach from the creek water. We now are having clean and safe drinking water because the prevailing situation is now over. Praise to God almighty and thanks to the family of Water of Life for the kind gesture and strength given to the developmental goal of our one nation mama Liberia.” - Peter Z
- In 2013, more than 45,000 Liberians were given fresh water and the message of Christ through 57 brand new wells and 26 rehabbed or repaired wells.
- In 2014, the two drill rig teams completed 93 brand new wells in 56 additional villages, and reaching 83,100 Liberians with the love of Christ.
- In 2015, a third drill rig team was added allowing Water of Life to share the Gospel with 95,000 Liberians through 161 water well projects.
Even though Water of Life has accomplished big things in West Africa, we know there is still great need. Your donations will meet The Last Well’s goal of giving Liberia in its entirety fresh water and the love of Christ. Your gifts will continue to transform hearts and lives in Sierra Leone. You can be the hands and feet of Christ in areas where it is greatly needed.
With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Give praise to the Lord, proclaim His name. Make known among the nations what HE has done, and proclaim that His name is exalted. Sing the Lord, for He has done glorious things. Let this be known to all the world. – from Isaiah 12
